A lush and healthy lawn provides your family with a place to play and relax outdoors. When the tips of grass become dried and brown, they give the lawn a burnt look that is not attractive. Pinpoint the cause of burnt grass tips to quickly restore the health of your lawn.

Dollar Spot

The fungus known as Sclerotinia homoeocarpa causes dollar spot disease. When turf grass is infected, the tips and sections of the leaves turn white or straw-colored, says the American Phytopathological Society. This can create a burnt look. The fungus flourishes in wet weather when dew moistens the grass but the soil remains dry. Proper watering and regular fertilization helps the grass stay healthy enough to resist infection.

Fertilizer

Applying too much fertilizer can cause a burnt look. The West Virginia University Extension Service says that the entire lawn can become lightly browned, or streaks of solid brown grass can indicate too much was applied. You can remove badly burnt spots with a sharp spade and add some grass seed to fill it in. Avoid applying fertilizer while the grass is wet from rain or dew. This causes the granules or liquid to stick to the leaves, leaving spots of damage and brown tips.

Dull Mowing Equipment

Cutting your grass with dull blades on your lawn mower can leave the entire lawn filled with brown, dead tips. A blade without a sharp edge will rip the grass rather than cutting it cleanly. This leaves a ragged edge that dries out and becomes brown. If the damaged tips on the grass are spread evenly over the entire lawn, try sharpening your mower blades and check the tips after you mow again.

Spills

A few drops of the wrong fluid can burn a brown spot into your lawn. Many homeowners find spots of damage after they fill their lawn mower with gasoline and spill a little. Urine and feces from your favorite pets will also leave a dry and dead spot in the lawn. Salt from ocean spray or winter street icing is another culprit behind brown grass tips. Avoid spills and train your dog to relieve themselves in a section of the yard that doesn't have any turf grass.
