One of these days, watching a hockey game over the Internet will be just as good as being there. That’s the idea behind a collaboration between the NHL and Otoy, which streamed a live hockey game in 360-degree high-definition virtual reality.

Cloud graphics startup Otoy worked with the NHL, New Deal Studios, and Immersive Media to create a unique experience for hockey fans. They captured the NHL Stadium Series game between the L.A. Kings and the San Jose Sharks.

Those viewing the experience could watch it from the comfort of their homes with devices such as the PC-connected Oculus Rift virtual reality headset or a Samsung Gear VR virtual reality mobile device. The video puts you in the middle of a 360-degree environment. You can look around in any direction, seeing things like tailgate parties, gate entry, the rink-side view, and the hockey game action. It’s like you’re there in person.

Viewers could change their perspective on a play, since the action was filmed from different angles. You could even position yourself directly above the goalie and goal line.

The creators tried to recreate the experience of all facets of being at the game, from the ability to watch practice sessions as if you’re sitting on the players’ bench to pre-game activities including tailgating, gate entry, and concessions, culminating in a front-row seat to the game with an eyeline just above the glass and over the rink that lets you follow plays or turn around to see what’s happening behind the net.

“Virtual reality affords us a tremendous opportunity to enjoy experiences we might not otherwise have the ability to,” said Jules Urbach, CEO of Otoy, in a statement. “Whether you’re a fan living on the other side of the country, or you just couldn’t snag a seat to the big game in your own backyard, virtual reality lets you be as close to the action as any ticket holder. The NHL has always been incredibly progressive about how it uses technology to give fans access, and we’re excited by the possibilities of harnessing OTOY’s virtual reality technology to help the league get fans even closer to the game they love.”

Otoy recorded the game at a 6K frame rate, with high-dynamic range. It used an experimental light field camera that is designed to provide even greater quality to the experience.

Peter DelGiacco, NHL chief technology officer, said in a statement, “With the advancements in virtual reality, the National Hockey League is excited about exploring the types of experiences this emerging field can bring to our fans. The outdoor game between the Sharks and Kings at Levi’s Stadium provided a great backdrop for a very successful first-ever test of VR technology in an NHL game.” The league views Otoy’s live streaming 360-degree VR technology as “second to none delivering an unparalleled fan experience that makes you feel like you’re there at the rink watching each play unfold with the rest of the crowd, even if you’re hundreds of miles away.”

Berkeley Ursa Major Team captains for Beat Saber and Echo Arenaby Madison HightAs the second season of the Collegiate VR Esports League (CVRE) draws to a close, two student teams have been crowned champions in Echo Arena and Beat Saber. Season 3 starts up in August, and promises to bring even more excitement to the league with new teams, tournament events, and more ways to get involved! Echo Arena RecapBecause the League is open to all students regardless of their experience with VR esports, many of the Echo Arena players this season were newcomers to the game’s (often challenging) mechanics.

What they lacked in expertise was made up for in enthusiasm and mentorship from the professional Echo community, with veteran players – and even competitors from rival teams – stepping in to share their knowledge through workshops and friendly pickup games. After dominating the regular season with an undefeated record, it was no surprise that St. Clair secured a top seed position to move on to the Semis. They were joined by Clemson, Berkeley, and Miami – the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th seeds respectively.Semis/Finals Bracket (Top 4 Seeds)The Berkeley vs. Clemson bracket was a close match, with Clemson ultimately coming out on top. Despite both Miami and Clemson putting up a struggle – both were the only teams to score on the Saints in Season 2 – St. Clair was the clear winner. Beat Saber RecapCompetitors for the regular season Beat Saber tournament started out on a much more even playing field, practicing expert level custom tracks from the season 2 song pool to prepare for matches.

Both Clemson and Berkeley quickly emerged as powerhouses in the league, with the Tigers’ only loss of the season coming at the hands of Berkeley Ursa Major (an insanely close match with one song having a final score differential of only 91 points between the teams). Despite a near season-ending injury on the Berkeley side, the two friendly rivals met again in the Semis as the 1st and 2nd seeds.Semis/Finals Bracket (Top 4 Seeds)Berkeley and Clemson were joined by Miami and Baylor in the Semis. By the date of the much-hyped Finals match, the Ursa Major players had recovered and trained enough to take the Season 2 championship title and remain undefeated in the League. Moving ForwardA substantial amount was learned from this second season of competition, and the CVRE team plans to use the summer to continue making updates to the league infrastructure while holding community events.

For future Beat Saber seasons, a tier system is in development in order to separate players at different skill levels. This will guarantee a more fair and encouraging environment for newer players while still exhibiting high level, competitive play from those in the upper tiers. With regard to Echo Arena, matches will switch to a two-half system that will make streams more engaging and allow casters to commentate more effectively. With a large number of new teams joining the league for season 3, there are proposals to add a third game to the tournament rotation. A new website is in the works to better support this growing competitor base with improved displays for player stats, community events, and league-related media. The CVRE team will also be continuing to travel to events across North America to promote VR access and help set up new teams. If you missed them at GDC and SXSW Gaming, make sure to stop by and say hello at Comic-Con San Diego and the Caltopia Esports, Gaming and VR Expo.
