The moment The Whispered World begins, the obvious beauty of the game is apparent. From the Don Bluth-alike animated cutscenes to the stunningly hand-drawn 2D backgrounds and character sprites, there is absolutely nothing about the game which looks sub-par. Characters are suitably nuanced, the briefest expression from Sadwick adding an extra depth to the already decent script. The voice acting, unfortunately, fails to live up to the heights of the rest of the production, and it's somewhat jarring to hear stunted, incorrectly intoned lines being delivered during an otherwise dramatic scene. It's a crying shame, as with many games of this type, a core part of the experience is interaction with other characters.

Interaction itself, a mouse-driven affair (with Space as an optional 'reveal all hot spots' button), is simple and intuitive. Holding the left mouse button brings up a radial menu from which you can choose Talk/ other potential mouth actions, Look or Use/Take. Right mouse button brings up the inventory. Occasionally, a puzzle will cause the mouse cursor to change to a context-sensitive hand, where a simple click will do. It's standard procedure, then, and the interface will feel familiar to any point and click veteran. As too will the bizarre leaps of logic you're occasionally required to make.

The challenge with adventure games set in a fantasy world has always been that we, as newcomers to this world, don't fully understand its rules, and must learn them through a process of experimentation. The Whispered World tries its best to ease the player in, dropping some clever hints by way of dialogue or in one case the instruction manual for a circus act. Everything generally makes sense, and the game goes out of its way to make sure of this, which is why the few incomprehensible puzzles are all the more jarring.

One in particular – whilst easily overcome due to there being few possible solutions – still eludes me as to just why it worked. There's little reward in making progress via pure trial and error, but early on The Whispered World outshines its peers within the fantasy setting subgenre of point and clicks, as anyone who's played Discworld or Simon The Sorcerer will attest.

The problem is that when this logic fails, or you fail to spot the clue the game is offering up, it can lead to some maddening sticking points. At least when you know a game's logic is generally outlandish, you can begin to think along those lines. Here, the mishmash of sensible and silly starts to hamper progress, particularly when it comes to Spot, Sadwick's caterpillar companion who can learn shape-shifting abilities from seemingly random sources. By the end, the puzzle solving begins to wear thin, especially with the inclusion of three set-piece puzzles including a sliding tile crest, but everything just manages to hold together and remain enjoyable, even if it teeters on the brink of annoyance at times.

Of course, a totally linear game is nothing without its plot, and The Whispered World doesn't disappoint in that respect. It's a relatively unique take on the 'reluctant hero saves the world' tale, with the kind of memorable ending that'll divide opinion straight down the middle. As with any point and click adventure it's an acquired taste. It's short and sweet, with a running time of between 6-10 hours, and while you don't travel very far from where you begin, Sadwick's world steeped in Autumnal hues, lit by flickering candles or offset by gorgeously blue skies, leaves the lasting impression of a hard-fought journey, through adolescence as much as through the Whispered World.
