“Where can I buy gym mirrors?” I’ve been asked this question many, many times now, so I figured it was time to throw up an article with some gym-mirror-shopping recommendations and suggestions. I’ll offer you a handful options ranging from potentially free to moderately expensive. Obviously your budget and your willingness to spend time shopping around will dictate which option is best for you.First of all, if you have already done some calling around locally for giant gym mirror quotes and seen how expensive large gym mirrors can be, don’t yet get discouraged. You can still have nicely sized gym mirrors in your home gym without spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on the hardware and the pro installation. You may also be thinking you need more mirrors than you really do. Let’s talk about it.Potentially free (or just very cheap) gym mirrorsIf you’re budget is so low you’re looking for free, you’re probably gonna have to deal with Craigslist. Search for homeowners, hotels, and apartments doing bathroom or bedroom renovations.

They won’t be as big as a vanity mirror probably, but some may be big enough. To me it looked like these type of mirrors were being sold or given away mostly because they were old and unattractive. For our purposes though, a mirror is a mirror once you get that ugly frame off of it.Another option I’ve heard people have had success with is to go to a home improvement store and ask if there are any returned or damaged vanity closet doors you can buy at a heavy discount. The stores typically have to write these things off at a complete loss,so any sale is better than no sale as far as they’re concerned. Just have to be willing to ask.If you’re willing to get creative and spend a little time looking around, there are plenty of free mirrors and inexpensive large mirrors out there.Super thrifty new gym mirrorsFor going the super thrifty new route, you can go to Target or Wal-Mart and buy those hanging door mirrors (approximately 12″ x 48″) and mount them side-by-side on your wall. Prices on these vary by quality, but are generally anywhere from $10 to $30 or more per mirror.I highly recommend that if you go this route that you do not buy the cheapest $10 mirrors. These mirrors are not glass and they are very flexible.

If you cannot get them absolutely flush against the wall when you mount them, you’ll think you’re in a Circus funhouse when you look into them.There are frameless varieties of these inexpensive mirrors that are glass (usually very thin 1/8″ glass). They’re fragile and tough to not break, but when you do get them mounted, at least it won’t be distorted.In all honesty, while these mirrors will work, I strongly suggest you go with the vanity mirrors I’ll talk about next. New mid-size vanity mirrors are still pretty cheap and look so much nicer than a row of 12″ wide box-store mirrors.New vanity mirrors as gym mirrorsBoth Lowes and Home Depot sell a variety of inexpensive vanity mirrors that are more than suitable for a garage gym. They offer them in all kinds of shapes and sizes, both with and without frames.

They are generally not very expensive, and they sell all the different types of mounting hardware right there in the store. Check their websites, or go right into the store and ask for help from an associate.

36″x60″ mirrors from Home Depot hung side-by-side to create an almost seamless gym mirror. Very affordable way to get a nice sized mirror.Keep in mind you don’t need floor to ceiling coverage for a gym mirror. A mirror can be a foot and a half or more above the ground and still allow you to see well below your feet when standing in front of it. What that means is that a mirror should be anywhere from 48″ to 72″ in height. Any more than that is unnecessary and any less is probably too short for the average person.The mirror from Home Depot in the image above, if placed 18″ above the ground, will have a total height of 78″. That’s more than enough for you to see your feet, head, and anything you press above your head. So if you have two side-by-side, you’d have a total mirror size of 72″ x 60″.

Pretty big mirror for approximately $120.Alternatively, get creative with decorative wall mirrors. Many of them have very minimalist frames and wouldn’t look out of place in a gym. The one pictured above is only for 21″ x 65″. Not bad at all, and it doesn’t have an awful frame. Check online stores like Amazon or local stores – anything from Target to true home decor stores.Safety Backed DIY Mirrorsoffers five different sizes of safety glass for gyms and dance studios; anywhere from 36″ x 60″ for about $300 a sheet, to 48″ x 84″ for $400 a sheet.

I figure that’s a pretty big perk; that and these prices seem competitive.Professionally installed gym mirrorsThe best looking mirrors for your garage gym are going to be the same mirrors you see in a commercial gym. They are larger, thicker, and should be professionally installed. This is not the budget route, however it can be done for less money than you might think; especially if you call a local glass company for a quote and negotiate a good price.My long-time online recommendation for ordering commercial mirrors has gone under, and I do not have an alternative recommendation to give. You mean concrete walls of the basement?If so, you should be able to find concrete anchors there at the Home Depot that aren’t very big; about the size of a normal little screw. Just buy the proper size concrete drill bit (it’ll say on the pack of anchors) and then hang it like the same way as if it were drywall or something. Though I don’t know if you can find anchors small enough to use the little plastic mirror hangers, might need something else. I would just ask someone there. For what it’s worth, I’ve found that people that work in special departments like say the door guy will tend to be more knowledgeable than the part timers that run around.
